Step by step instructions
Wash 1 cup toor dal thoroughly under running water.
Add dal to a pressure cooker with 3 cups water, 1/2 tsp turmeric, and salt.
Cook for 3–4 whistles until soft and mash lightly.
Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a pan on medium flame.
Add 1 tsp cumin seeds and let them crackle.
Add a pinch of Okhliwali Hing and stir for 2–3 seconds.
Add chopped garlic and sauté until light golden.
Add chopped onion and cook until translucent.
Add chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, and cook until oil separates.
Pour this tadka over cooked dal and mix well.
Simmer for 2–3 minutes and serve hot.
